Verified cheat sheet (faculty). Definition: p/q, p, q integers, q ≠ 0. Standard form: positive denominator; co-prime numerator & denominator. Key identities: • Additive inverse: −a (a + (−a) = 0) • Multiplicative identity: 1 • Reciprocal: q/p (does not exist for 0) Properties: closure, commutativity (add & multiply), associativity (add & multiply), distributivity, every non-zero rational has a reciprocal, 0 is the additive identity. NOT commutative: subtraction & division. Between any two rationals → infinitely many rationals (use the mean!).

How to plot a/b: 1. Draw the line, mark 0 and 1. 2. For negatives use the left side; for >1 mark whole numbers first (11/4 → between 2 and 3). 3. Divide the unit interval into |q| equal parts. 4. Count |p| parts from the anchor (0 or the whole number). Try: 4/5, −7/4, 9/2, 2/3. Mean trick: the mean of a/b and c/d is always between them: (a/b + c/d)/2.
